“We definitely have something to prove here in Guadeloupe.” – Carl Brown, Cayman Islands’ Head Coach
Friday, October 10 – Les Abymes, Guadeloupe: The Cayman Islands’ team arrived in Guadeloupe on Wednesday, October 8, confident and eager to play their three matches in Les Abymes. Group F of the Digicel Caribbean Championship marks the beginning of Stage Two and includes 12 country teams.
Cayman Islands will play hosts Guadeloupe on Saturday October 11 and then play Martinique on Monday, October 13, and Grenada on Wednesday, October 15. Cayman Island’s Head Coach, Carl Brown, speaks of the team’s readiness: “The guys are very excited! They are aiming to prove that Cayman Islands can and will do this.
“We are just coming in from Miami where we played Haiti and beat them in 2-0 and 1-0, so the guys are extremely confident about our three upcoming DCC matches.”
Cayman Islands, who joined FIFA in 1992, have moved up 22 points to #162 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking. The progress the Caymans have made is nothing short of impressive for an islands chain of just over 40,000. Though the Cayman Islands put in a decent showing in the first round of qualifying for South Africa 2010, in the end they were bested by a strong Bermudan outfit. With something to prove, Cayman Islands knocked Bermuda out of Stage One of the Digicel Caribbean Championship and are aiming for the finals in Jamaica scheduled for December. Coach Brown explains: “We definitely have something to prove here in Guadeloupe. Not many thought we would be in Stage two of the DCC, but we are and we plan to go all the way.”
Cayman Islands play DCC Stage Two hosts Guadeloupe in the second match on Saturday, October 11. They then play the stylish Martinique and the spicy Grenada on Monday and Wednesday respectively.
