Youth parliamentarians in Carriacou will show off their debating skills on Thursday April 10th at the first sitting of the Carriacou Youth Parliament.
Today’s occasion marks the start to the Department of Youth Development’s Youth Parliament and Debates for 2008. The parliamentarians have been training for the past few months to discuss the topic: “Be it resolved, that songs that promote violence and indecent behavior should be banned from all television and radio programmes and all other programmes that entertain young people”. The debates are being conducted on a parish basis after which outstanding parliamentarians will move on to debate on a national level. Project Officer in the Department of Youth Development with responsibility for Youth Parliament and Debates, Mr. Johnny Calliste, encourages the entire Carriacou and Petite Martinique population to come out as it is an opportunity to see young people display knowledge of parliamentary procedures while seeing them debate issues that affect them directly. He says that the Carriacou Youth Parliament will also host the official opening ceremony of Youth Parliaments for 2008. The Carriacou Youth Parliament starts at 4:30 pm and will take place at the Laurina Hotel, Carriacou..
