Caribbean Food & Nutrition Day

The Grenada Food & Nutrition Council observes Caribbean Food & Nutrition Day on Sunday June 1, 2007 under the theme “Healthy Eating and Active Living – Be Aware of Trans Fat”.

Last year our objective was to get Grenadians to include more fruits, vegetables and physical activity in their lifestyle. Employers were asked to provide for employees, schools for the students and restaurants for their customers.

This year we will be encouraging Grenadians to continue eating healthier and practicing a more active lifestyle. However a special emphasis will be placed on looking at dietary fats and health, especially Trans Fat and how it affects the body. There will be a week of activities leading up to this day which will see the Council visiting various schools and clinics to educate persons on Trans Fat and its effects.

There will also be a walkathon for the public which would incorporate the aspect of being more physically active. The activities will close with the launch of a poster competition for primary and secondary school students on their understanding and interpretation of Trans Fats. Information will also be delivered to all media outlet for dissemination.

The activities being done by the Council include a Poster Competition for 5th and 6th Grade students within the Primary School and also for Secondary school Students; Public education presentations within Primary schools and clinics on Trans Fat; and a parish to parish Aerobicathon during the month of June.

We encourage everyone to continue the focus of last year whereby Employers should provide fruits for both their employees and clients, Schools do the same for the students and restaurateurs also provide a fruit with each meal purchased.

It is of great importance that Grenadians realize the benefits that can be derived from a healthy lifestyle. Unless they decide to start living a healthy life, they will lose what is considered the most valuable gift they have; their life. The Grenada Food & Nutrition Council has always encouraged Grenadians to learn to read food labels and be knowledgeable of the contents of their food. For more information on Trans Fat the public is invited to visit the Office of the Grenada Food & Nutrition Council upstairs the Fish Market, Melville Street, St. George. A lifestyle inclusive of Healthy Eating and Physical Activity can only reap positive benefits. Employees are more productive and they take less sick days whilst students are normally more attentive and they improve in their academic performance..
