Being godly in treatment of elderly and in communing

St. George’s, November 7, 2011 – MP Peter David, who had promised special attention to senior citizens in October, ended the month by supporting a luncheon for more than 90 of them.

October was observed as “Month of the Elderly’’ throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Mr. David, MP for the Town of St. George, visited elderly citizens at their private residences, as well as many living in seniors’ homes in the parish.

In conjunction with representatives of the Geriatric Caregivers’ Program, he also delivered baskets of food and medicine to some seniors in his constituency.

In one of the final activities of the month, MP David and members of the Organization for Community Enrichment bused about 50 elderly citizens to a beach in South St. George for a luncheon in their honour.

The same day, another 40 lunches were delivered to seniors at home and about 15 more to a group of youth repairing a board walk on Melville Street, St. George’s.

By coincidence also sharing the beach on the day of the elderly luncheon sponsored by MP David and the Organization for Community Enrichment was a group that included Brenda Hood, former Town of St. George Member of Parliament.

Hood, a former Tourism Minister, mingled with the organizers and wished the elderly “all the best,’’ urging them to take good care of their health.

David, General Secretary of the ruling NDC and Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, said he was “grateful’’ to be part of the occasion with the seniors, who have played their part in making Grenada the country it is today.

“This luncheon can never make up for all that you have done,’’ said MP David, who emphasized that he is the parliamentary representative for “all the people of the Town of St. George.’’

David also said that a country is judged by the way it treats its elderly.

“If we don’t commune nicely with each other,’’ he said, “we can’t say we are godly.’’
