Another Catholic Priest Ordained

Born in St. Lucia, Andrew Barnard has been working in the Diocese of St. George’s for the past ten years. On Saturday 19 June 2010 he was ordained priest by Bishop Vincent Darius in a very colourful ceremony that was attended by His Excellency Sir Carlyle Glean, Lady Glean and by several government ministers.

An impressive part of the rite of ordination was when Rev. Andrew lay prostrate on the floor of the sanctuary while the Litany of the Saints was being sung and the whole congregation prayed for him. Before being ordained by the laying on of hands Rev. Andrew placed his hands in the hands of the bishop to pledge allegiance to the bishop and his successors.

Fr. Barnard is the third young man to be ordained priest in Grenada in the past three years.

Many of Fr. Andrew’s relatives travelled from St. Lucia, Martinique and Barbados to celebrate this great event with him. Some experienced long delays and many anxious moments because of the problems of LIAT.

On Sunday 20 June Fr. Andrew celebrated his first Holy Mass in St. Martin de Porres parish church, Crochu.

It is expected that Fr. Andrew will be appointed to a parish as soon as he returns from a short vacation in his native St. Lucia.
