St George’s, December 27, 2013 – Politicians, social workers, members of the clergy, volunteers and donors, mixed and mingled at one of the largest luncheon gatherings in St George’s over the Christmas holidays.

The annual Christmas dinner of the Anglican Church’s Community Program for the Poor is primarily intended for people 60 years and older.

However, after more than 25 years of the event, it now attracts younger men and women, as well as children accompanied by parents of various religious backgrounds.

The 2013 dinner was the largest in many years and organizers were forced to move the event from its customary location at Court Lily of the Valley on Upper Market Hill to Church Street at the St George’s Anglican Senior School (SGASS).

“Thank God for another successful luncheon. Our heartfelt appreciation to everyone – especially the crew of volunteers – who contributed time, cash, goods or encouraged with moral support,’’ said Pamela Steele, a staunch Anglican and one of the driving forces behind the hosting of the luncheon.

Father Raymond Roberts, who spent many years as a teacher and principal at SGASS before joining the priesthood, returned to offer prayers to open the luncheon celebration of eating, drinking, caroling and serenading by a guitarist and singer.

In addition, more than 145 food parcels were distributed to guests who also met at least two longstanding luncheon donors, Town of St George MP and Foreign Minister, Nickolas Steele; and lawyer and former MP, Peter David.

Steele expressed his delight at being able to participate in the event. He wished all a merry and spiritual Christmas, reminding them also that the holiday season was a time for sharing and giving thanks.
