Anger over vendor’s presence at Old Trafford Playing Field

St. George’s, September 16, 2011 – Sporting fans from several areas of St. George’s are unhappy with the return of a food-vending cart on the recently refurbished Old Trafford Playing Field at Tanteen.

Old Trafford reverted to its original use, such as cricket and football, with the combined efforts of the Ministry of Sports, MP Peter David and the Carenage Organization for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE).

For close to seven years, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, Old Trafford was the site of classrooms, and some motorists also used it as a parking lot.

The vendor, who was off the field during rehabilitation work on the field, is back selling during school hours.

His presence angered many people who telephoned or complained directly to officials of CORE and the Ministry of Sports; Sports Minister Patrick Simmons; and MP David, who is the parliamentary representative for the Town of St. George.

One source said that during the period of the former NNP administration, the vendor had received a permission letter to use Old Trafford.

According to the source, assurance has been given that a new site will be secured for the vendor, and he’ll be relocated from Old Trafford as early as next week.
