Kingston, JAMAICA. “We join West Indians everywhere in congratulating our players and celebrating a magnificent victory over Sri Lanka to win the world T20 Championship.” This was the reaction of the President of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, to the dominant performance of the West Indies team in the final of the ICC World T20 tournament when they overwhelmed Sri Lanka to win by 36 runs.
“This was a team effort and shows what a committed, focused and motivated team can do,” Hinds said. “It was good to see how they all rallied around and supported one another. Marlon Samuels was magnificent, scoring runs and getting wickets when we needed them, and deserves his Man of the Match Award.”
The WIPA President also congratulated the ICC and the Sri Lankan Cricket Board for a truly memorable tournament. “Cricket was the ultimate winner. The tournament was extremely well organized and the spirit in which the tournament was played was exemplary.”
Commenting on the future of the team and West Indies Cricket, Mr. Hinds said, “It is great to see what all West Indies cricket fans have been hoping for – a West Indies resurgence that can propel us along a path back to the pinnacle of world cricket. This is a step on the road to recovering the pride. However, it is also a reminder that if you treat the players with respect and if the Board and WIPA work together there is no question that West Indies Cricket will regain its former glory.”
Hinds also sent congratulations to the management and coaching staff in recognition of their contribution to the team’s success.
“The support staff is often overlooked following a championship win, and we want to also congratulate the team’s management, coaches and physical trainers for their role in the victory,” continued Hinds. “This was truly a “team” win – with everyone playing a role in the success.”
