Hundreds of people from the Town of St. George, including parliamentary representative Hon. Peter David, are expected in the south of the island this Saturday, July 25, for a celebration on the Grenada Anse Beach. The Family Day Beach Lime, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. near the St. George’s University building, is one of several events currently being held or planned by the Constituency Group for the Town of St. George.
“The Beach Lime is in keeping with my philosophy of bringing people together, and of always striving for unity at the community level and on a national level,’’ said MP David. The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), David was a key strategist and fundraiser in the party’s sweeping 11 – 4 victory in last year’s general election. He is now the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, in the government of Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, Leader of the NDC.
Yvonne James, an Assistant General of the NDC, and a constituency organizer in the Town of St. George, described the Beach Lime as “an opportunity for people to socialize.’’ She said invitations are being extended to NDC Members of Parliament and other party officials to attend Saturday’s event.
“We want people to come and socialize and to bring their families,’’ James urged. “We will have some impromptu singing competitions, games, food and drinks. Those who wish to, and are able to, can also bring supplementary dishes as well as their favorite non-alcohol beverages. This is our first Beach Lime and we intend to make it an annual event.’’
James said the Constituency Group, on behalf of Mr. David, is planning to help a group of some of the most needy students who were successful in this year’s Common Entrance examinations and will be entering secondary school in September. MP David and the group have begun mobilizing school supplies at home and abroad for the students. “Sometime before the end of August, the students will receive donation of items such as exercise books, pens and pencils, geometry sets and socks,’’ said MP David.
He disclosed that two Back-to-School Health Fairs are also being organized by the Town of St. George Constituency Group. The first is on August 29 on the Melville Street Court and the other is on September 1 at the secondary school in Queen’s Park. At the fairs, children will receive free medical check ups. In the meantime, free computer training classes are continuing at Mr. David’s constituency office in River Road.
Registration for the computer training is ongoing.
“Interested persons can register by contacting me at 403-3239,’’ James said. “They can also call Caren at 415-6613 or Pauline at 404-0793.’’
