A desire for more private sector-sponsored neighbourhood initiatives

St. George’s, December 20, 2011 – A Grenada government minister has said that he would like to see more private sector involvement in neighbourhood projects such as the construction and enhancement of playing fields and community centres.

Tourism Minister and NDC MP for the Town of St. George, Peter David, made the comment Tuesday while participating in a Christmas party for kids at the Tanteen Children’s Playground, which is commonly referred to as the Swing.

The party, which was hosted by the Town of St. George Constituency Group and the Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE), brought together dozens of children from the Carenage, Herbert Blaize Street, Green Street, Grenville Street, Williamson Road and other parts of the city.

The rehabilitation and enhancement of the Tanteen Children’s Playground were financed by telecommunications’ provider, LIME, in cooperation with MP David and the Ministry of Sports.

“This has turned out to be a wonderful initiative. I’m proud of the work that was done and I’m happy to see the frequent daily use of the Swing,’’ said Mr. David, who is also General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress. “My desire is to see more private sector-sponsored initiatives like this right across the country.’’

He wished the children at Tuesday’s party a merry Christmas and joined a group of community volunteers in the distribution of food, drinks and toys.

“This was a great afternoon for the children and the plan is to return to the Swing next year,’’ MP David said, before leaving the playground to attend another children’s Christmas party in Mt. Rush.

Official of CORE and the Constituency Group expressed delight with the many individuals and private sector groups that freely contributed to the Christmas party held on the grounds of the Swing.

“We want to thank them and to also extend our appreciation to panorama champions, Republic Bank Angel Harps, for supplying the music for the party.’’
