Nicholas Steele described as “out of touch’’

St. George’s, March 21, 2012 – Residents of River Road and Darbeau in St. George’s have described rookie NNP politician, Nicholas Steele, as being “out of touch’’ with what’s happening in their community.

At a public meeting last Sunday of the New National Party, Steele claimed that NDC MP for the Town of St. George, Peter David, had been taking “personal credit’’ for the installation of lights on the playing field adjacent to Wesley College.

Moreover, Steele questioned how is it that residents of the community “can’t play a game on that field at night as yet?’’

He threatened that that if the lights are not fixed within one month, he would “mobilize the people and we will fix the lights.’’

However, representatives of both Queen’s Park Rangers (QPR) and the River Road/Darbeau Development Organisation have dismissed the comments of Steele, a businessman and the NNP caretaker for the Town of St. George.

“This is cheap politicking from Mr. Steele, who shows that he is out of touch. And it is not the first ignorant comments from him,’’ said one veteran QPR member.

“I remember when he criticized Peter David for visiting the blocks to meet with his constituents. Mr. Steele knows nothing about the lights nor what has been happening on the playing field.’’

The field has been the venue of a fully sponsored night football competition that was launched in February, an official of the River Road/Darbeau Development Organisation revealed.

“In fact, at the very time Nicholas Steele was speaking at the rally on Sunday night, football was taking place on the field at Queen’s Park,’’ he said. “So, I don’t know who he is planning to mobilize and to do what. Peter David, through his own personal efforts, was able to get the lights for us and we are thankful.’’

River Road and Darbeau residents are also soon to benefit from the reopening of their community centre in Queen’s Park.

The centre was severely damaged in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan.

MP David, who has been closely involved in the rehabilitation of the centre, has commended the diligence of the contractors and praised the volunteer work that has been provided by residents to ensure the completion of the project.

He said the centre will be opened “once the final finishing touches are completed and contractors have given the green light, signifying that work is done.’’
