TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO OPPOSITION LEADER MAKES APPEAL FOR HELP FOR GRENADA AIRPORT

Trinidad and Tobago Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Rowley, says the twin-island Republic cannot turn a blind eye and allow the economy of Grenada to collapse.

Rowley was speaking during a media conference yesterday, relating to the issue pertaining to the Maurice Bishop International Airport situation and the ongoing Taiwan loan issue.

In view of monies Grenada owes Taiwan, Airlines and cruise ships servicing the Spice Isle are making payments into an escrow account, as a result of an order from an American court.

The Manager of the airport has stated that the situation is likely to throw the operations at the facility in a rather difficult position.

Considering Grenada as a vital market for products made in Trinidad and Tobago, Rowley told reporters, that the twin-island Republic could be hurting itself if it fails to act.

In this regard, he said the Opposition was asking the Trinidad and Tobago Government led by Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, to get involved in the dispute and to assist the Grenada Government.

The objective, according to Rowley, is for the Grenada Government to get out of the situation since the airport is a vital contributor to the Grenadian economy.

He’s of the view that if Grenada’s economy is damaged it cannot continue to buy Trinidad and Tobago products and that can have serious consequences.

Rowley said Trinidad and Tobago’s involvement may not mean giving financial assistance, but through the use of its diplomatic strength.

In his words, “we cannot behave as though that problem is not our problem.”
