ST. GEORGE, GRENADA, June 10, 2011 – One of the innovations promised by the Grenada Carnival Committee (GCC) for 2011 was the hosting of a Carnival City. Thursday, June 9 saw the delivery of that promise and what a lovely affair it was. The amphitheatre nestled within the ruins of Fort Matthew, in Richmond Hill provided the perfect ambience for an entertaining evening of rich Grenadian music. The response from the scores of patrons was unanimous. The GCC was showered with praise for the idea of having Carnival City and persons were convinced that the choice of location was ideal.
During the Launch of Spicemas 2011, Chairman Colin Dowe stated that the GCC heard the call of carnival lovers, who have lamented over the years that there was a five (5) week lull in entertainment after the official launch of Spicemas. In response to this, the GCC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, identified Fort Matthew as Carnival City. The Committee has committed to providing carnival entertainment every Thursday and Sunday evenings. Producer Clarence Baker informed persons that they can expect the pulsating sound of Grenadian soca on Thursday evenings while all things carnival will be on show during the Sunday afternoon events.
The opening of Carnival City saw outstanding performances from young divas, Shonis Bain and Apphia Clarke along with male duo, Satisfaction. Hollis Mapp, aka Mr. Killa demonstrated that he was very ready for the 2011 season with an energetic performance that had the audience going. After three encores, Mr. Energy himself was still performing his magic. The host of Carnival City, Lyndon Fatman George was not to be outdone as his combination of humour and song provided a wonderful touch to the proceedings.
Carnival City continues this Sunday from 5 p.m. when the lineup will include LIME Commancheroes, traditional masqueraders, women in calypso and much more along with entertainment and refreshments for the children.
Adults will pay $5 while children under 12 enter free. The Morne Jaloux – Marian Bus Association has committed to providing a shuttle service from the bus terminal to Fort Matthew.
