The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Carriacou was the medical facility that came to the rescue of a couple who had to hastily flee their comfort zone, following a vicious attack while anchored on their yacht in the neighboring St Vincent Grenadine island of Union Island last Thursday Night.
Christina Curtin had to be rushed to the Island of Carriacou by her boyfriend who was the other occupant of their yacht where the tourist was severely chopped on the face and shoulder.
Curtin’s boyfriend and owner of the yacht, Mark Biser, said they arrived at about 9:50pm at the Hillsborough jetty where the waiting ambulance took them both to the Hospital from where his girlfriend departed early Friday morning for the General Hospital in Grenada via air transport.
Biser, who is originally from Florida but has been living in St Croix, said that they were in Clifton Union island from Monday before and on Thursday decided to go over to frigate island (just outside Ashton) where they did some snorkeling, with blood still oozing from two wounds to his forehead, he said that it was about 8pm when they both sat down for dinner. His girlfriend said she heard a noise and as she looked up she received two chops to the face and shoulder.
Biser said the one to her face literally took one side completely off, immediately he said as he pulled her further into the boat, he was dealt two blows to his head. Still shaken he said, he then reached for his kitchen knife and stabbed the intruder several times to the stomach.
After dealing him several “serious stabs” he said the intruder jumped into the water leaving his boat behind.
“I’m not sure he would live but I had to defend myself” the Florida resident Said.
According to him the extent of the injuries to his girlfriend’s face would surely require her to travel to the United States of America for surgery.
Looking totally distressed he said that after the hurricane season which ends on November 30th, he will be packing up and returning to his native country.
He is cautioning yachters to avoid mooring in areas where there are very few boats.
“Only one other yacht was in the area and that’s dangerous for visitors” added Biser whose yacht was painted in blood from his girlfriend “ you sure with the amount of blood that two people were murdered there” he said.
The weapon (cutlass) allegedly used to commit those vicious acts was taken by members of the Carriacou branch of the Royal Grenada Police force who had already communicated the incident to their colleagues in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
