Errol Joseph Maitland was born on March 1, 1948 to Millicent La Qua-Boney of Back Street, Tempe and Eric Maydown Maitland of Belmont. At the age of four he was taken under the wings of Mrs. Miriam Florietta Evans-Maitland and Wilfred Maitland, his grandparents.
