Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag hit his second career triple century in the first Test against South Africa today to join Sir Donald Bradman and Brian Lara for this achievement.
Sehwag finished unbeaten on 309 as India reached 468 for 1 in reply to South Africa’s first innings 540 all out at stumps on the third day at Chennai.
In 2004 Sehwag (29) made 309 against pakistan to became only the third player to achieve the feat of two triple century matching Australian great Sir Don Bradman and West Indies world recorder holder Brian Lara.
This was the fastest triple hundred in Test cricket since the scorers began recording number of balls faced by a batsman.
Sehwag reached 300 in just 278 balls in the final session, passing previous best, Australian Matthew Hayden’s who made 300 in 362-ball against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003-4.
The 29 year old hit hit 42 fours and 5 sixes to race to his triple hundred, pushing paceman Makhaya Ntini for a single to squareleg.
Sehwag, who batted for over eight hours to reach the milestone, celebrated triumphantly and embraced partner Rahul Dravid as the South African fielders applauded and the Indian players and spectators gave him a standing ovation..
