Thirty five year old former Guyana sprinter Roger Gill, who competed for Guyana at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was killed in a car crash in Brooklyn on Sunday March 2, 2008.
The 2008 BMW in which Gill was riding hit an unoccupied truck early Sunday morning. He died shortly after at the Brookdale Hospital.
The car was driven by his friend 35 year old Warren Davies who died on the spot. Police believe that the driver was speeding.
Gill ran the anchor leg in the 4 by 400 meter relay in Atlanta. Guyana finished sixth out of seven teams in it’s first-round heat and did not advance. Gill is survived by his wife, Annette who is expecting twins and their four children.
Meanwhile, the Stony Brook University’s Department of Athletics says it is in mourning for the lost of its former track & field stars Gill & Davies.
Gill, according to the University, was a stand out sprinter for Stony Brook in the early 90’s and still holds the school’s outdoor records in the 100 and 200 meters as well as holding the marks indoors at 200 and 400 meters.
Gill is also listed in the Stony Brook record books as a member of five recordholding relay teams. Gill was the first freshman All-American, earning All-American honors six times during his career. He was also twice selected the Stony Brook Athlete of the Year..
