SENATOR BOWEN PLEADS FOR FORMER CCC WORKERS

Tuesday 29th March 2011: Senator the Honorable Gregory Bowen has called on the NDC Administration to come to the assistance of the former Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) workers who are in the process of losing their homes. Senator Bowen made the call during his presentation at the New National Party’s Rescue Mission Rally at the Telescope Playing Field.

The former Government Minister in the previous NNP Administration described the situation of the former workers as one where several of them are in the process of losing their homes as the bank has a number of them up for sale. He reminded the thousands gathered that it was the NDC Administration that said there was no Phase II.  Senator Bowen stated that the NDC Government was announcing the recommencement of the project without having signed the Financing Agreement in 2010. He spoke of them again announcing the start of the project while signatures by the government to the Construction Contract are outstanding.

Local news reports have stated that the CCC is now facing over one million dollars in replacement parts for equipment that was vandalized at its Mt Hartman Facility during their absence. Bowen spoke of the NDC Government being unwilling to pay CCC a three million dollar remobilization fee which is holding up the process of the recommencement of work.  Senator Bowen described this approach as unfair since it is the NDC Government who are responsible for the demobilization of the CCC in Grenada in the first place while they attempted to bring in another contractor.

The NNP Chairman called on the NDC Government to immediately resolve the problems surrounding the CCC debacle and ensure that at least some of the former workers would be able to save their homes and their families.
