CHURCHES’ RESTORATION PROJECT RECEIVES BOOST

Four major churches which have become national symbols in Grenada received a boost to their reconstruction drive.  Colombian Emeralds International has contributed 5,000 dollars to the restoration of the St. George’s Catholic Church.

The four churches all suffered extensive damage when hurricane Ivan ravaged Grenada four years ago.

Since Ivan, the individual denominations have continued to raise funds for the restoration/ rebuilding work, but this has gone very slowly

To counter this, the Willie Redhead Foundation, which is committed to the preservation of Grenada’s architectural heritage, launched Faith with Action as a project fund to embrace all Grenadians and friends of Grenada.

Its co-coordinator, Barbadian Tony Webster says the responsibility of restoring the church must be shared by all, and he asked those at the cabinet table to help in this regard, through part grant or part loan.

Minister for Ecclesiastical Relations Senator Ann David Antoine described the mission as a noble one.

She commended the efforts of civil society in this venture.

The Willie Redhead Foundation is partnering with Colombian Emeralds, the Rotary Club of Grenada, and the New Life Organization in this initiative.

Colombian Emerald’s Island Manager Chris Edwards is hoping that their involvement will help other businesses that benefit from tourism to realize the importance of this venture, and so, get on board.
