No ceremony to welcome new chartered airlift from Canada

A report from the Ministry of Tourism said that there will be no ceremony to welcome the airlines from Canada that will be making chartered trips during the height of the winter season.

Instead it appears that the visitors from Air Canada, Sunwing and Jazz Air will be welcome as part of the Board of Tourism Special Christmas “Meet and Greet” programme which began on December 15th and conclude on December 24th 2010.

During the “Meet and Greet” period at Maurice Bishop International Airport, all arriving passengers are welcome to the island with special performance from local acts and served delicacies indigenous to the country and drinks that are served during the Christmas season such as sorrel, ginger beer, rum punch and beer.

Air Canada is scheduled to make its inaugural flight for the 2010/2011 winter season on December 18th 2010, Jazz Air on December 21st and Sunwing will operate three chartered flight during December.

The Canadian market, is for the region the only market which continues to show signs of growth not just for Grenada but for the entire Caribbean Tourism Organisation membership and with its currency almost on par with the United States dollar hoteliers are expected to continue embarking on strategies that will further penetrate the market.

A statement from the Ministry of Tourism quotes Tourism Minister Peter David as saying that the increase airlift from Canada speaks well for Grenada’s Diaspora tourism initiative. “We must recognize that the Diaspora is not only about remittances but it is also a large section of our tourism industry,” he said.

David is also of the opinion that the current success relating to these charters from Canada is the result of hard work that involved many people, including former Tourism Minister Glynnis Roberts. Earlier in 2010, Grenada embarked on a series of sessions with Canadian Tour operators and also made use of promotional opportunities during the recently concluded CTO Toronto Week.

Minister David said that he was quite delighted to know that the tourism industry will get a boost during the Christmas holidays by virtue of the fact that more Canadians are selecting Grenada as their destination of choice during this winter season.

  1. we grenadian in canada need to have a airline going direct to grenada all the time not just during the winter and summer holidays. We don’t want to bw going through trinidad or barbados all the time maybe mr minister should think about that, plus he grenada will get more vistors. we as grenadian would love to come home without all that problem we sometimes get.

  2. How much do you speculate the airport is making monetarily by allowing Air Canada to use Grenada as a destination point?
