YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAMME 2011 A SUCCESS

Hillsborough, Carriacou, August 12, 2011- Productive and successful are the words being used to describe the Ministry of Youth Empowerment’s Summer Programme that recently concluded in Carriacou.

The nationwide programme, which was also conducted at eight centres in Grenada, was designed enhance the creative talents of participants, as well as to improve their self-awareness, problem-solving and personal development skills.

The programme, for youth in Carriacou and Petite Martinique between the ages of 14 and 25, was held at the Hillsborough Government School in Beausejour.

However, interest the three-week programme – held under the theme, “Expressing Yourself Through Creative Arts” – was shown by children as young as 11.

According to youth officers in Carriacou, the programme was “very productive and highly successful. The children learnt very quickly and were outstanding in their work.’’

The programme included lectures and discussion, as well as hands-on activities such as floral decorating, crocheting and fabric art making.

The young participants were instructed in playing musical instruments and also learnt Big Drum and Quadrille Dances, the two main traditional dances of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The programme ended with an exhibition of the works of participants, who also received certificates and prizes.
