States Must Condemn US Attacks Against the ICC

June 11, 2020: NEW YORK – States Parties to the Rome Statute must strongly oppose the persistent, shameful attacks by the U.S. government against the International Criminal Court (ICC), said the World Federalist Movement – Institute for Global Policy (WFM-IGP) today.

On June 11, 2020, Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo announced the authorization of economic sanctions against ICC officials directly engaged in ICC investigations into the conduct of US or allied personnel. In an unprecedented move, the U.S. administration is also expanding its visa restrictions policy against family members of ICC officials involved in such investigations.

“This is an outrageous act that targets individuals for doing nothing more than pursuing justice for victims of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity,” said WFM-IGP’s Director of Programs, Ms. Anjali Manivannan. “Left unchallenged, this policy will destroy the ICC, and this must be stopped.”

The U.S. has repeatedly threatened and attacked the ICC following the Prosecutor’s efforts to initiate an investigation into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan.

“The increasing U.S. attacks against the ICC have undermined America’s historical contributions to the fight against impunity for mass atrocities,” said Manivannan. “We call on all ICC States Parties to support the Court by issuing diplomatic letters of protest to the U.S. without delay.”
