The summer holidays and related seasonal festivities are here! It has become the norm during this period for persons to engage in a number of fitness / exercise regimes, to prepare themselves for various activities being undertaken during the summer and in particular, carnival.

In an unprecedented and exciting new collaboration, St. Augustine’s Medical Services (SAMS) has partnered with Fit for Life, one of Grenada’s leading health and fitness centres, to make available a welcome element of added safety and wellness to the Gym’s annual anticipated Fitness Revolution summer workout sessions. On July 15th 2014, the programme commenced with sessions scheduled for three days per week.

Whilst regular exercise is highly recommended by doctors and required in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Lutz ‘Joe’ Amechi, Resident General Practitioner of SAMS, encouraged persons to engage in moderate exercise, keeping within your body’s limits.“Exercise is important. Through our partnership with Fit for Life Gym, SAMS is ensuring the overall well-being of the gym’s members, whilst also being on site at the Morne Rouge Playing Field in the event participants encounter any difficulties during the sessions due to overexertion.” He commented.

Studies from the United States inform that injuries related to overexertion account for over 3 million hospital visits a year. Individuals can experience a multitude of symptoms from overexertion. Symptoms are varied and can range from irritability, frequent napping, and confusion, to increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, fainting, kidney damage, and in extreme cases, can even result in death.

Over-exertion can be physical from pushing the body past its limits; from fatigue – pushing the mind and body too long and not getting enough sleep; Hypoglycemia (low sugar) and dehydration. To prevent or reduce chances of experiencing overexertion, Dr. Amechi urged persons to visit their doctor before beginning an exercise regime to ensure it is within their limits. “As with anything else, exercise should be done in moderation and done regularly. It’s a standard practice for persons to consult their doctor before taking on a new exercise regime. Taking frequent breaks during exercise or when doing any repetitive motions, drinking sufficient water, avoiding very sugary or caffeinated drinks, and getting a good night’s sleep, are just a few things that can be done to prevent overexertion.” Dr. Amechi further noted.
