Power removed from the Market Square Vending Booths, St. George’s

As part of our ongoing safety evaluations, an electrical inspector from the Ministry of Communications Works and the Meter Services Team from the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) recently conducted joint inspections of electrical installations at the St. George’s Market Square.

The inspectors have reported a number of defects related to the electrical installation at some of the vending booths.  Of particular concern is the deterioration of critical insulation of electrical cables and illegal and unsafe load sharing between booths, by occupants who are tapping into each other’s electricity supply.

Our Company is gravely concerned about this situation, as it presents a significant safety hazard to the vendors and members of the public who conduct business at the Market.

Under the circumstances, we have written to the Minister of Communications and Works to make recommendations about the corrective actions that can be taken to resolve the situation.

We have advised the Minister and we wish to advise the vendors and the general public that we are left with no choice, but to disconnect the main supply to all the booths, until the situation is rectified.

On Thursday, members of our team, along with representatives of the Ministry of Communications and Works visited GRENLEC’s 12 metered customers and other vendors at the Market to advise them of the situation and to ask for their understanding and usual cooperation.

GRENLEC sincerely regrets the inconvenience to all concerned. GRENLEC must continue to treat matters of safety with the highest level of attention and our company has a duty to act in the best interest of our customers and the general public.

Please be assured that we stand ready to reconnect the power supply to the Market, as soon as it is safe for us to do so.
