Possible shooting of films in Grenada

St. George’s, January 25, 2009 (GIS) – Senator Arley Gill, Minister of State responsible for Culture, says an opportunity could be opening to record part of Grenada’s cultural history on film.

He made the comment following a request from a film company to visit Grenada to launch a documentary called “Calypso Dreams.’’

Senator Gill was contacted by Dr. Geoffrey Dunn, director and executive producer of “Calypso Dreams,’’ after the documentary was shown on Channel 12, the television network of the Government Information Service.

Dr. Dunn congratulated Senator Gill for having “the insight to televise ‘Calypso Dreams’ to the people of Grenada.’’

The Senator, who has described “Calypso Dreams’’ as an “amazing documentary’’ and a “good lesson in Caribbean history,’’ says discussions are being held on a possible launch of the film in Grenada.

“Such a documentary can only benefit the artform and benefit the practitioners of the artform on the island,’’ he said. “I believe that all should be done to ensure that we have persons who are involved in such a production to come to Grenada to share their experiences with us.’’

More than that, Hon. Gill said, Dr. Dunn and his film company have ongoing projects with which Grenada can get involved.

“They have indicated that there are other projects on stream and we have suggested that, if possible, we would like to be considered as one of the sites that they can come to,’’ said Senator Gill.. “In Grenada, we believe that we have more than a story to tell and we want to invite them to look at the possibility of doing things on the island..’’

“Calypso Dreams,’’ heralded as one of the greatest films of the English-speaking Caribbean, focuses on the history and development of calypso in Trinidad and Tobago.

It’s filmed on location at places such as the homes of entertainers, on the streets and in shops.

The documentary also includes commentaries by David Rudder and Harry Belafonte and interviews with scores of artistes, including Grenada-born Mighty Sparrow, Mighty Bomber and Brother Valentino.
