Officials of the National Democratic Congress are expected to hold a second round of talks today (Thursday, April 3) with a visiting delegation from the Organisation of American States (OAS).
According to Opposition MP Nazim Burke, the main focus of the meeting will the presentation of an NDC document detailing the party’s concerns relating to election registration and problems at the Electoral Office in St. George’s.
NDC executive members first met with the three-member technical team from the OAS on Wednesday. Burke, who attended the meeting, said he was satisfied with the outcome. “The NDC raised the concern with the delegation that the electoral office has been purged of all the experienced persons over the last twelve months,” said Burke. “Persons who are experienced in the administration of the Voters’ List, and the conduct of the elections, have been removed from that office.”
The brief visit to Grenada by the OAS representatives was arranged to have them observe preparations for the upcoming general elections. They were formally invited here by Prime Minister Keith Mitchell after several calls by the NDC for independent observers.
The NDC has consistently protested discrepancies in the Voters’ List, including stressing the need for the recovery of more than 500 names that went missing after a computer crash at the Electoral Office. The party has also demanded the purging from the list of the names of over 100 dead people.
Burke, the Member of Parliament for St. George North-East, has blamed the shortage of staff at the Electoral Office for the numerous inefficiencies in the administration of the Voters’ List.
The MP, who is also NDC Public Relations Officer, discussed the Voters’ List inefficiencies at Wednesday’s meeting with the OAS officials.
“After several months the names of dead persons continue to reappear on the list,” Burke lamented. “We do not want the final Voters’ List to be used in the election to be presented on the final night to the presiding officer and the political parties.”
For the final list of voters to have any integrity, added Burke, “it must be delivered no less than three weeks before the election to all the stakeholders including the political parties.”
For today’s meeting, said Burke, the NDC will respond to a delegation request for certain information by presenting them with a document of the party’s concerns.
“What this document will show is that what we are saying today is not new. All that has happened so far in terms of progress is because of the initiatives, demands and insistence of the NDC,” Burke said.
The OAS team has assured the NDC that it will be meeting with officials of the Electoral Office to discuss the concerns raised by the party.
While expressing confidence in the competences of the OAS officials, Burke noted that any improvement and correction in the situation would require the full and necessary cooperation of the Electoral Office. .
