Newly Elected Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique to Visit New York

Brooklyn, New York—September 1, 2008—Grenada’s newly elected Prime Minister Tillman Thomas is scheduled to lead a high level delegation on a visit to New York, September  17 – 22, 2008.  This is Prime Minister Thomas’ first visit to the United States of America since assuming office following the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) decisive victory at the polls last July.

The six-day trip is intended to update Grenadians abroad on the current state of affairs; present the new government’s plans for the future; and explore new avenues for investment and development in the tri-island state.

To this end, Prime Minister Thomas and his delegation will host a town hall meeting at Medgar Evers College on Sunday, September 21st, in addition to attending worship services at several largely Grenadian congregations in Brooklyn.  They will also meet with representatives from a variety of business, academic, health and social institutions in an effort to develop a strategic framework for co-operation and development between these bodies and various government sectors in Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

The delegation’s schedule of activities also includes interviews with the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, and a live television broadcast on Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT).     A breakfast meeting with the board of directors of the Caribbean-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACCI), and a luncheon with members of the New York Chapter of the National Democratic Congress are also planned.

The prime minister will be the guest of honor at a black tie affair, hosted by the NY Chapter of the NDC, on Friday, September 19th at the Astoria World Manor.

Prime Minister Thomas’ first official visit to the United States ends on Monday, September 22nd.

  1. In the words of the minister of Finance (the financial situation in the treasury is a mess). So if there is no money in the treasury, how are we funding this leisure trip?
We all know that it is an expensive trip for a “High level delegation” to travel to the USA. And yes we know that this trip will bring little or no real benefit to the Grenadian people.
It is no secret that this is a victory celebration. Now if the trip is funded by the NY chapter of NDC I say go for . However, lets be careful about these oversee trips. We cannot afford to waste the already limited resources.
