NAWASA planning more reliable water supply

St. George’s, December 1, 2009 – The National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) has unveiled a Strategic Plan that includes ensuring the agency is capable of supplying all customers with a “reliable, adequate and safe supply of water.’’

NAWASA says the plan, covering the period 2009 – 2014, is also an initiative geared to meeting sewerage needs in “designated priority areas.’’

The Strategic Plan was launched November 27 at NAWASA’s annual staff meeting, where board chairman Terrence Smith outlined the drafting of the document which would guide the operations of the agency, and act as a framework in the medium and long terms.

Mr. Smith said that following the hiring of local management consultants, an analysis of the NAWASA’s current operations was conducted. He added that there were also many hours of stakeholder consultations and meetings involving customers, senior management and a wide cross-section of employees.

A copy of the plan, which NAWASA says is also to “ensure that a sustainable pool of trained and efficient human resources is available for ongoing functioning’’ of the agency, has been presented to Minister of Works Hon. Joseph Gilbert, and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ms. Lana McPhail.

NAWASA also hopes that the plan will “provide a high quality customer experience that is comparable with international benchmarks and standards for the water sector.’’

Mr. Smith, like Minister Gilbert, expressed pride at the accomplishments of NAWASA.  However, the board chairman admitted that the task now is to implement the Strategic Plan through completion of activities identified in NAWASA’s annual business plans.  The 2010 business plan, which was recently completed, is in the process of obtaining ministerial approval.

Hon. Gilbert has applauded the directors and management on the Strategic Plan initiative and has pledged his ministry’s continued support NAWASA’s endeavours.
