The Ministry of Health earlier today investigated reports of an unusually high number of students, exhibiting Influenza- Flu like symptoms, at a public school in St. George’s.
As a first response, the Ministry immediately dispatched a team of senior public health nurses to the institution, where a total of 13 students were evaluated, in keeping with existing health protocols.
During the process, the public healthcare officers discovered that three of the thirteen students examined, had elevated body temperatures. They were asked to return home and monitor their condition for 24 hours without the aid of any fever reducing agent. This is a standard medical practice according to the health officers.
Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Emma Herry-Thompson, expressed confidence in the nurses that carried out the investigation and confirmed that the ministry has taken the necessary steps to identify the problem.
Meanwhile the Chief Medical Officer has called on persons to refrain from causing unnecessary panic, which she says, can only have negative implications for Grenada, especially at the commencement of the new tourist season.
The Ministry has also reminded citizens to continue personal hygiene practices, which are among the most effective ways to minimize the transmission of diseases.
Only last week, health education officials met with principals to provide them on procedures that should be followed in the event of a suspected outbreak. The principals were also updated on the “best management practices” in preventing both students and staff from getting sick.
