St. George’s Grenada: Local Attorney Jimmy Bristol has described the civil law suit filed by the Attorney General as one compounding a situation in which he believes the constitutional right of the executive of the opposition National Democratic Congress was infringed upon.
He believes it will only serve to discredit the government locally and regionally.
But news paper editor Leslie Pierre is of a different opinion. He says he would have been disappointed if no further action was taken
High court action number 196 of 2008 between Attorney General Elvin Nimrod and PC 77 Kelon Noel as claimants and nine members of the National Democratic Congress as defendants is generating as much debate locally as it is regionally, as was the case with the alleged spying incident.Mr. Bristol says he understands that government has admitted that the officer was acting on its behalf and in that case, a law suit to recover items reportedly taken from the officer is justified.
He adds that he sees no basis on which the government is insisting on filing for damages from assault, neither does he understand why a medical report is not attached to the documents
Bristol is worried that what is playing out in Grenada brings back memories of the pre 1979 era and situations that exist in Zimbabwe, and Kenya and this he says is not spelling well for the country.
The nine defendants have fourteen days from the date of service of the claim within which to indicate to the court whether they will defend the case or not and a further fourteen days to put in their defense.
