GRENADA (5 June 2014) Guests at Calabash Grenada have contributed over EC$500 to the Bel Air Children’s Home at Calliste. The money has been raised from the sales of a booklet that describes the tropical gardens in which the hotel is set.
A regular guest at the hotel was so impressed with the gardens that, last year, he photographed and prepared notes on many of the tropical plants that he saw as he and his wife strolled in the gardens.
“It really is an idyllic setting. I was curious about many of the plants so I guessed that other visitors might also like to know a little about them,” said Peter Sotheran, a retired publisher and printer from North Yorkshire in England. Sotheran has visited Grenada and stayed at the Calabash Hotel in Prickly Bay every year for the last decade.
He prepared the first draft of the book during his two week stay in 2013 and produced the final edit when he returned to his home in northern England. The books were printed in England and shipped out to the island last October.
The 24 page booklet is illustrated in full colour with photographs taken in situ in the gardens. Guests are invited to donate EC$10 or US$5 for a copy. The booklet was launched in October 2013 and by Christmas the hotel had collected and handed over EC$380. Between Christmas and Easter, guests donated a further EC$160, making a total of EC$540.
When all the stock sells through, the booklet is expected to have raised EC$2500 for the children’s home.
“We take great pride in our gardens and are delighted that the booklet enables our guests to support the children’s home,” said Adele Garbutt, Resort Director.
