ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, MARCH 17, 2011_Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has congratulated the Right Hon. Sir Charles Michael Dennis Byron, on his appointment as President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, to take effect in August 2011.

Speaking to students at the St. Louis RC Girls School, also known as Mother Rose, in St. George’s earlier today the Prime Minister said Sir Dennis is a model for students who dare to dream.

“Like Sir Dennis, you must prepare now for the opportunities that will come your way. Use those opportunities to fulfill your dreams and become a successful professional, who can make a meaningful contribution to your society,” the Prime Minister told the students.

He said Sir Dennis, from St. Kitts, has given outstanding service to the region and is well suited to succeed the Right Hon. Michael de la Bastide T.C., who is due to retire on August 18, 2011, in the position of President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

“Sir Dennis continues to make an outstanding contribution to this region.

His work has been recognized by the international community, which provided him the opportunity to be appointed to his present assignment as President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)”, Prime Minister Thomas said Wednesday.

The Prime Minister said the region has both the capacity and the human resources to properly establish its own legal system and reiterated his government’s commitment to the CCJ.

“My administration is very supportive of the Caribbean Court of Justice and we are putting all the necessary measures in place that will make the CCJ the final appellate court for our country.

We have always maintained that the region has the requisite human resources and legal competence to manage a legal system to properly serve the people of Grenada and our region,” the Prime Minister and Minister for Legal Affairs, said.

He applauded Sir Dennis on his service to the Eastern Caribbean as High Court Judge, Justice of Appeal and Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
