Election of the Grenada Taekwondo Association

St. George’s, Grenada: October 8, 2010 – The Interim Committee, on behalf of the members of Grenada’s taekwondo community, announces an election for the executive council of the Grenada Taekwondo Association. The Election, which seeks to appoint the first locally based President will be held on October 16, 2010.

The Interim Committee’s mandate is to assist with implementing reform of the Grenada Taekwondo Association to ensure that the ongoing needs of Grenada’s taekwondo community are effectively addressed and that Grenadians benefit from the proceeds of local and international aid to assist with the development of taekwondo in Grenada.

The members of the Interim Committee were chosen from among the taekwondo community, following a vote of endorsement from four (4) out of the five (5) taekwondo schools in Grenada and Carriacou to work on behalf of the taekwondo community; the fifth school is led by the current President who has declined the opportunity to respond to invitations for participation in community discussions.

“Taekwondo is a martial art that teaches and demands discipline, respect, integrity and indomitable spirit. This is just what is needed in Grenada’s community and we are excited to bring new opportunities to develop these tenets in Grenadians” Melvaughn Coutain

Grenada has been proudly represented in international sparring competitions, respectfully boasting medal showings at major international competitions such as Pan Am Championships, Caribbean Championships, US Open and Toronto Open.  Despite such promising accomplishments, Grenada’s National  taekwondo team is at threat of being excluded from major upcoming events such as Caribbean Championships, Pan Am and Olympic Games selections.

The Grenada Taekwondo Association has been led by a foreign based President since its inception in 2003. During this time, Grenada’s taekwondo community has suffered the consequences of the President’s challenge to service the interests of Grenada’s vibrant taekwondo community while based in London, England. Grenada’s taekwondo community has united to bring about the change that is necessary for the development of the sport of taekwondo in Grenada.

“I am really excited about raising the aspirations of Grenadian youth towards competing at an international level.” Andrea St.Bernard
