Commonwealth Day has being observed yesterday, Monday March 10th, 2008 throughout all Commonwealth member countries across the world under the theme: “The Environment-Our Future”. Commonwealth Youth Representative for Grenada and Regional Chairman of the Commonwealth Youth Programme- Mr. Norman Gilbert in his statement for the day encouraged the youth of Grenada to be more conscious of their environment. Mr. Gilbert also stated: “The creation of a sustainable environment is highly dependant on the actions of our youth and we must remember that a healthy environment leads to a healthy nation”. While Minister for Youth Development Senator the Honorable Emmalin Pierre stated that she and the Department of Youth Development remain committed to the principles of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Youth Minister also emphasized the importance of preservation of the environment to the nation’s youth. Minister Pierre stated that it is indeed important for future generations how we care for the environment in this generation. The Department of Youth Development on the occasion of Commonwealth Day 2008 is staging a series of activities. These include a Commonwealth Essay Competition with the objective of increasing young people’s awareness of the Commonwealth and promoting knowledge of the various cultures. This competition was held on a parish basis from 2:30 pm on Monday March 10th. .
