Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in Syria and other countries

Pope Francis on private visit at St Agostino church in Rome

Speaking to the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday 1st September 2013, Pope Francis called for Saturday, 7th September, 2013, to be a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria, the entire Middle East and throughout the world.

He spoke of his horror at the images emerging from the conflict and condemned the use of chemical weapons in the strongest possible terms. “There is a judgment of God and of history upon our actions which are inescapable.” he said. The Holy Father made a strong appeal for peace “Never has the use of violence brought peace in its wake. War begets war, violence begets violence” he said.

Catholics in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and people of all faiths, are asked to practice fasting by denying themselves at least one meal on Saturday of this week and to spend time in prayer for peace in Syria and in all the other countries of the world where innocent people are suffering because of war.
