Culture Minister satisfied with Independence celebrations

St. George’s, February 9, 2012 – Grenadians nationwide have been commended for their display of patriotism and their participation in the one-month celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Independence.

“I am deeply satisfied with the response to the Independence events from the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. It was a commendable demonstration of love for the nation from young and old and from people across different socio-economic and political strata,’’ said Senator Arley Gill, Minister of State with Responsibility for Culture.

The events were spearheaded by the National Celebrations’ Committee (NCC) headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Smith Roberts.

Among the innovations of the NCC was the inauguration of a “Prime Minister’s Best Village Competition.’’ Participating villages were judged in the areas of culture, food and the environment. Petite Martinique emerged as overall winner.

A first time this year was also the hosting of a “Parish Day’’ in each parish, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Sen. Gill congratulated the winners of competitions and praised the efforts of ACP Roberts and the NCC, as well as the support provided to the organizers by various subcommittees, village and parish groups, the Ministry of Culture and the Grenada Cultural Foundation.

“The success we achieved would not have been possible without this massive show of support from various groups and individuals and I thank them all. As we go forward, we must build on our successes and improve on areas of weaknesses,’’ Sen. Gill said.

The theme of the Independence celebrations was, “Breaking all Barriers; Striving for Greater Achievements Under One Flag.’’

Independence Day on Tuesday was marked by a cultural pageant and military parade at the National Stadium. It was followed by a firework display from Fort Frederick, as well as cultural entertainment on the Carenage from Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra and the Royal Grenada Police Force Band.

The next national cultural event is Carriacou’s carnival, which culminates on February 20 and 21.

“I’m inviting all Grenadians to travel to Carriacou to participate in, and enjoy, Shakespeare Mas and other wonderful aspects of carnival in Carriacou,’’ said Sen. Gill.
