Commonwealth Secretary-General available in Caribbean for interviews on climate change, disasters and debt

14 February 2020: Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland will attend the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) next week in Barbados.

During the leaders’ summit, she will highlight how the Commonwealth is helping Caribbean countries tackle the effects of climate change and strengthen their response to disasters.

The Secretary-General is available for interviews on topics such as:

  • Climate finance – the Commonwealth has helped small and other vulnerable states, including five in the Caribbean, receive over $30 million in funds to improve their response to the climate crisis. An extra $503 million in the pipeline.
  • The global climate emergency – the urgency to reduce carbon emissions to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C;
  • Ocean action – the acute threat climate change poses to the ocean and the need to recognise ocean action within the climate solution;
  • Debt management – all Caribbean member countries use the Commonwealth debt management software to manage their public and publicly guaranteed debt; and
  • Disaster support – giving member countries’ easier access to key financing data such as loans and insurances through a Commonwealth portal;
