CAVE HILL, Barbados – Tino Best is looking to give it his best shot and take West Indies all the way when he lines up in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The fiery fast bowler, who first played for the Windies a decade ago, made a successful return to international cricket last year after several seasons in the wilderness and is looking to continue his resurgence.

“I have been playing some decent one-day cricket. I had a decent tour of Australia and I did pretty well against the Zimbabweans when we returned from Australia. I’m very happy and excited to be part of the Champions Trophy,” Best said.

“I believe our chances are as good as any other team in the competition. We have some amazing talent in our dressing room. It is really exciting to play alongside such a talented group of players and I’m relishing the opportunity to do well for the people of the region.”

Best added: “I’m about 80 percent and loading…I don’t want to go too hard in the camp and then when the tournament comes I’m tired. I want to hit the tournament at 100 percent and bowling rapid (pace).”

The 31-year-old was speaking on Wednesday after players held a full training session at the Sagicor High Performance Centre at the 3Ws Oval, under the guidance of Head Coach Ottis Gibson.

The camp started on Monday and will end on Friday. The team will depart from Barbados on Saturday and have another camp in Cardiff, Wales from May 25 to June 2 as they try to get acclimatised to the foreign conditions.

Best said he is eagerly looking forward to playing in the United Kingdom where he did well last year. During the Test series against England he made a world-record 95 batting at Number 11.

He said will arrive full of confidence based on the brilliant showing in Sri Lanka last October when they won the ICC World T20 Championship.

“Last summer was amazing. To come back into the Test team and do so well felt really good and gave me the confidence to kick on and do even better. I’m looking forward to playing in England once again. Once we play as unit as we did in Sri Lanka, I think we will do very well again. It is not a one-man show,” Best noted.

The ICC Champions Trophy will feature eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The tournament will be played across three venues – Cardiff Wales Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval – from June 6-23.

The Windies have been drawn in Group B alongside the Indians, the Pakistanis and the South Africans. They open against Pakistan on Friday, June 7 at the Oval and return to the famous venue on Tuesday, June 11 to take on India. The final preliminary match will be against the Proteas on Friday, June 14 in Cardiff.

CAVE HILL, Barbados – Devon Smith is hoping to make the most of what he calls a “golden opportunity” during the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2013. The left-handed opener was away from the international stage for three years, but has been recalled following heavy scoring in the recently-concluded WICB Regional 4 Day and Regional Super 50 tournaments.

He was the leading batsman in both competitions with 700 runs at an average of 70 in the first-class championship. He was equally impressive in the 50-over format with 348 runs at 58 runs per innings.

The 31-year-old said: “I feel very confident seeing that I did really well in the four-day and the one-day tournaments and I just have to go out there and play my game and be the Devon Smith I know I can be. In England the ball will swing early on, and as we all know there is never a dull moment when you play cricket in England, it is always entertaining and fascinating and a great place to play.

“I will look to be positive and confident at the crease and make this golden opportunity count in this tournament. The ball will swing especially at this stage of the season in England so you have to make sure you pick up the line early and play the ball as late as possible, look to get in, and make some big runs,” he added.

Smith was speaking on Tuesday as the Windies continued preparations in a bid to capture the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy title for the second time. Under Head Coach Ottis Gibson the Windies will be going through their drills at Sagicor High Performance Centre at the 3Ws Oval.

The camp started on Monday and will end on Friday. The team will depart from Barbados on Saturday and have another camp in Cardiff, Wales from May 25 to June 2 as they try to get acclimatised to the foreign conditions.

Smith’s highest score in ODIs came during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 when he made a career-best 107 against Ireland at Mohali. During that tournament he was the highest run-scorer for the West Indies. However, he admitted he was inconsistent in his early days and is looking to make amends.

“This year should be my year, especially the way I started in the four-day tournament and the Super 50. I’m concentrating on converting my good starts into big scores. Before I used to get good starts and then lose my wicket. This year I worked hard at getting in and staying in and carry on to big centuries,” Smith said.

“For West Indies I have not been consistent enough. I’ve had some good innings, but it’s the consistency that has led me down. I’ll be looking to string scores together and contribute in a major way to the team’s success.”

The ICC Champions Trophy will feature eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The tournament will be played across three venues – Cardiff Wales Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval from June 6-23.

Bridgetown, Barbados – West Indies have started their preparations in a bid to capture the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy 2013 title with a one-week camp in Barbados. Under Head Coach Ottis Gibson the Windies will go through their drills at Sagicor High Performance Centre at the 3Ws Oval.

The camp started on Monday and will end on Friday. The team will depart from Barbados on Saturday. They will have another camp in Cardiff, Wales from May 25 to June 2 as they try to get acclimatised to the foreign conditions.

Gibson has been at the helm for over three years and is confident the players will get maximum use of the five days of intense work. He also believes the team, to be led by Dwayne Bravo, has the right combination to capture the trophy for the second time. Brian Lara’s team won the 2004 tournament, when they beat host England by two wickets in a memorable final at the Oval.

“We will have a week in Barbados where will we put in some hard work as well as look to do team building exercises,” Gibson said. “We will then leave for Cardiff where we will put in some more work and get ready for the tournament. It is a great opportunity for us. We have quite a few players who have played in England and Wales before.”

Gibson added: “The hardest thing will be to get used to the conditions early. But we have quite an experienced One-Day outfit at the moment, so once we get there and get acclimatised early we will be OK.

“We believe we can win these big tournaments, having recently done it in Sri Lanka when we played brilliantly to win the ICC World T20 Championship. So, this is something that we are really looking forward to. Getting acclimatised to the conditions early will be a huge factor.”

The ICC Champions Trophy, will feature eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The tournament will be played across three venues – Cardiff Wales Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval – over 18 days in this action-packed event from June 6-23.

“We understand what it will take for us to do well in England and we recognise we will have to be able to bat out the 50 overs, absorb the pressure and be able to catch up at the back end of our innings. We will need a lot of good efforts from the top order to get us in good positions and we believe we have the bowling attack to do very well in the English conditions,” Gibson said.

“We haven’t done all that well in the 50-over format recently and that is something we are trying to address. We had some success against Zimbabwe recently at home and that is certainly something that we can build on as we head to England.

Gibson noted that the ICC Champions Trophy is an important tournament ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. “This is a good opportunity for us as a one-day team to see where we are compared to the other guys. This tournament format is similar to how the World Cup is going to be – you have to get out of the group stage to advance to the second phase,” he said.

“We hope the success and the experience we had in Sri Lanka will help everybody to stay calm when the pressure is on. Our stated aim is to move up the ranking and this tournament will give us a really good opportunity to see where we are compared to the other teams.”

St John’s, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today announced the schedule for England’s tour of the Caribbean 2014.

West Indies and England will play three One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds in Antigua and Kensington Oval in Barbados respectively.

The series will commence on February 28 and conclude on March 13 and the Twenty20 matches will be the last before West Indies defend their World Twenty20 title in Bangladesh.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated tours on the cricketing calendar. West Indies’ battles with England have been legendary, going back to 1928 when the two teams first played. This Limited Overs series will form part of that rich legacy of competition which fans on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean are looking forward to with great anticipation,” Cricket Operations Manager Roland Holder said.

“These two powerhouse Limited Overs teams possess some of the leading players in the world and the contests are sure to be entertaining and competitive in the very attractive 50 Over and Twenty20 Over formats,” Holder said.

“The Caribbean has always benefitted from English fans travelling to the region for cricket and this compact series will be an ideal opportunity for that tradition to continue in what are two of the world’s premier tourism destinations – Antigua and Barbados,” Holder noted.

“We are especially pleased that we are able to confirm and announce the full schedule well in advance of the series which will allow English fans who wish to travel to the Caribbean for the series to make their plans early,” Holder added.

“There are also scores of West Indian fans who travel internally in the Caribbean and from beyond the region for cricket and they will also benefit from the early announcement of the schedule,” Holder said.

England won the ICC World Twenty20 in Barbados in 2010, defeating Australia in the final. West Indies are reigning World Twenty20 champions, having won the trophy in 2012, beating Sri Lanka in the final.

St George’s, May 15, 2013 – A Grenadian journalist is complaining to media colleagues about threats of lawsuit he says he has received from J Cliff Ganus, a student representative at St George’s University (SGU).

Mikey Hutchinson said the threats came in the wake of a weekend story on the death of an SGU student that he posted on the website of local radio station, WEE FM.

Hutchinson, a popular WEE FM broadcaster and an executive member of the Media Workers Association of Grenada, broke the news Saturday, saying there are “unconfirmed reports’’ that a medical student of the St. George’s University was found hanging in her apartment.’’

According to Hutchinson’s report, the name of the deceased “was given by another student as Nyawira Mwaura. Nyawira is said to be a Kenyan national’’.

Hutchinson, webmaster of his station’s internet site, also said that “a fellow medical student’’ had described the woman’s death as “shocking’’.

“The colleague, who spoke on the condition that her identity is not revealed, told weefmgrenada.com that Nyawira was a quiet person who seemed to enjoy her own company,’’ Hutchinson reported.

Police subsequently confirmed Hutchinson’s information, naming the deceased as 25-year-old Nyawira Nwaura of Kenya, and said she was found at her rental apartment in the south of the island.

Police said Nwaura was discovered “in a kneeling position inside her bedroom with a belt buckled around her neck and the other end tied to the bed post’’.

They added that the medical student, who had failed to show up at the airport to meet a sister who was visiting her from Canada, died as a result of “asphyxia, constriction of the neck and hanging’’.

However, Hutchinson’s reporting appears to have incurred the ire of Ganus.

In a comment on the WEE FM website, Ganus expressed disappointment in the “integrity and journalistic ethics of this station for reporting something so tragic without even confirming the reports. I would be ashamed to be a part of any organization who disregards the ethical considerations of journalism, as well as the compassion involved in such a sensitive subject’’.

Hutchinson said Ganus also e-mailed and telephoned him.

Ganus, he said, claimed that he “represented the student body at SGU in the capacity as president’’.

“Mr Ganus, in no uncertain terms, demanded that I remove the article online, failing which I will face legal action. I asked him on what grounds is he making his demands and he stated that the information contained in the article is false and also insensitive. Mr. Ganus further requested that I reveal my source,’’ Hutchinson said in his complaint letter addressed to “media colleagues’’.

Hutchinson revealed that before publishing his story, he had notified Nwaura’s family and had withheld release of the article for more than
12 hours.

He charged that Ganus’ response to the article is “nothing short of an attack on press freedom and the free flow of ‘information without interference’, a provision set out in Section 10 Subsection 1 of the Constitution of Grenada’’.

Ganus, in one e-mail note to Hutchinson, said “it seems like a very extravagant step to file a lawsuit’’ over the article that he demanded removed from the WEE FM website.

For the moment, Ganus told Hutchinson, “I will be writing to all the local sponsors I see on the page, requesting that they take note of the unprofessional – and frankly inappropriate – methods of self-promotion being taken by the station. I will be encouraging all the other students at SGU to do the same’’.

Grenada police say they are continuing their investigation into the death of Nwaura, who was on her final year in medical school.

The Honourable Stephenson King, Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition in Saint Lucia’s House of Parliament, has written to Her Excellency the Governor General regarding the matter of a license purportedly given Colorado oilman Jack Grynberg.

At the heart of his letter is the question whether Her Excellency, Dame Pearlette Louisy, had issued such license, since she alone is legally authorized by the Minerals (Vesting) Act to do, or whether a license was issued by someone else ultra vires the Constitution of Saint Lucia.

Jack Grynberg is currently in the process of suing the Government of Saint Lucia for “breach of contract,” based on a license he claims was issued to him and which affords him sole rights to explore for oil under the Saint Lucia seabed.

Mr. Grynberg has claimed damages in the sum of USD$500 million!

All attempts going back to 2006 at soliciting clarification in the best interests of the nation from the present government about this matter currently before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) have been rebuffed.

In their unceasing efforts to get to the bottom of the largely secret transaction between the Kenny Anthony-led government and Mr. Jack Grynberg, opposition parliamentarians have encountered road block after road block, some set up by the current House Speaker, Mr. Peter Foster.

Mr. Foster is also the prime minister’s lawyer in a pending Grynberg-related matter against the MP for Castries Central, Richard Frederick.

Commenting on the announcement, Sagicor WIHPC head coach Graeme West said he was very excited about the prospects of transforming a new group of players.

“Now that I have been in the position at the Sagicor WIHPC for more than 12 months, I feel I’m more confident about the knowledge of players and understanding of how a talented, young player in the Caribbean develops and is looking to the develop,” he said.

“I’ve also had the benefit of watching some of the players in regional matches and looking to see how we can help them improve for the benefit of cricket at the regional, as well as the international level.”

He added: “We will need to spend some time initially on the players’ skills, fitness and developing their all-round game before stepping up their preparation to deal with competitive situations.

“The batting in the regional matches is a good example of an area that we can really improve. We have footage of when the players have potentially made some mistakes this year and when they have performed well, and use these as opportunities for instruction.”

The new squad will be encamped from June 1 at the Sagicor WIHPC’s facilities located at the University of the West Indies campus here.

The HPC programme has been broadened to focus more intensely on developing the mental prowess of the players in addition to the standard rigorous training in skills development and fitness required for high performance athletes.

The players will also benefit from specialised training in a number of other areas including their roles as ambassadors, personal development, anti-doping, anti-corruption and media skills.

The 2013 programme will conclude in December this year.

St John’s, Antigua – A packed season of regional age group cricket is in store for the most promising junior players in the region.

The season will bowl off on June 29 when the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under 17 tournament commences in Tobago.

In its second year, the newest regional age group tournament will run through to July 8. Defending champions Jamaica, who won the inaugural tournament which was also held in Tobago will be looking to defend their title against the five other regional teams – Barbados, Guyana, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and Windward Islands.

The Barbadian youngsters will begin the defence of their Regional Under 15 tournament on July 10 in Jamaica. The Under 15 Tournament will also be contested by the six traditional regional teams and will conclude on July 26.

Also commencing on July 10will be the month-long WICB Regional Under 19 Tournament which will be played in the Leeward Islands.

WICB Cricket Operations Manager and former West Indies batsman, Roland Holder said that the age group tournaments will allow the next generation of West Indies players to test their skills against their regional counterparts.

“These age group tournaments are critical in the developmental structure of West Indies Cricket as they allow for talent identification at a young age,” Holder added.

“With the addition of the Under 17 tournament we now have a full menu of age group cricket without any gaps so players can transition from the Under 15 to the Under 17 and then to the Under 19,” Holder explained.

“After these tournaments the players can then go on to play senior cricket for the respective territories while also coming into consideration for the Sagicor High Performance Centre, West Indies A Team and other developmental programmes in West Indies Cricket,” Holder added.

“What is particularly important about the Under 19 tournament this year is that the ICC Under 19 World Cup is next year so we expect the competition for places on the World Cup squad to be fierce and the selectors will be paying keen attention to the best performers,” Holder said.

The age qualifications for the three tournaments are as follows:
